Key Benefits
Switching technology
The adoption of switching technology has
allowed Token Ring backbones to deliver increased performance, resilience
and scalability to the core of the network. As a natural evolution, Token
Ring switching can be used to provide these benefits throughout the network.
By leveraging the power of installed Token Ring NICs, switched desktop
connections can offer 16Mbps (full-duplex) of bandwidth to each PC, and
the capability of a high-speed uplink to the network backbone. This is
a dramatic increase in the bandwidth available to users on conventional,
shared-media Token Ring. In addition, dedicated connections eliminate
the likelihood of disruption that rogue PCs can cause on shared rings,
improving both manageability and reliability and therefore reducing support
costs.
Combining advanced ease of use functionality
with exceptional performance, the Smart DeskStream Token Ring Switch signifies
the arrival of true, desktop switching for Token Ring users and is the
ideal replacement for traditional shared hub technology.
Removes Complexity
Provides dedicated, high-performance connections to every user with inherent
simplicity and reliability. The Smart DeskStream also supports resilient,
high-speed backbone connectivity using 100 Mbps Token Ring Ethernet or
ATM. By providing a total workgroup solution within a single device, unnecessary
complexity is removed from the network.
With excellent scalability and ample bandwidth to cope with growing client
application demands,
combined with the efficiency of large Token Ring frames and built-in support
for traffic
prioritization, the Smart DeskStream is sure to keep pace with your needs.
Minimizes Disruptions
Eliminating shared rings reduces the potential for minor faults that can
affect a whole group of
users, while redundant backbone connections can be used for additional
resilience. If a problem does arise, powerful management and built-in
RMON functionality are available to help localize the problem to a particular
link with minimal disruption.
Investment protection
Being a direct replacement for existing hubs, the Smart DeskStream will
use currently installed Token Ring adapters, cabling and racking, avoiding
the need for further investment. Designed to seamless integrate with multi-service
IP-based networks, the Smart DeskStream is an ideal platform for supporting
the emerging standards in Token Ring networking.
Key Features
Switching Technology
Madge's Smart DeskStream employs high speed,
low latency cut-through switching to deliver wire-speed bandwidth to every
desk, optimizing network-application performance. The highly scaleable
stacking architecture offers simple, gradual expansion as additional network
connections are required. This means Smart DeskStream can provide a port
density of over 200 ports in a stack, improving ease of management and
reducing rack space requirements.
Auto-speed and auto-media sensing
ports
With automatic sensing of speed and cable type on every port, and the
use of Source Route Switching technology no configuration of the switch
or clients is usually necessary. Remaining hubs are easily accommodated
via a special port on the switch.
Security Enhancments
With the provision of dedicated connections, the risk of promiscuous data
“snooping” that can
occur on shared rings is avoided. The Smart DeskStream also offers additional
features to
restrict network access to users with trusted MAC addresses for additional
security.
DeskStream Software
DeskStream Software includes support for
the complete range of DeskStream option modules, including support for
the 2-port 10/100 Mbps Ethernet translational switching module. Madge
DeskStream Software includes powerful RMON, port mirroring, traffic profiling
and security management options and support for the dual-redundant ATM
module, together with comprehensive on-line help files.
